Memorial services for Richard Edward Shea, Jr., age 79, of Moorestown, N.J., formerly of Quincy, will be privately held at a future date.
Mr. Shea died suddenly on June 30 at Jefferson Health Hospital in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Eldest son of the late Richard Sr. and Katherine (née Broderick) Shea. Beloved husband of Linda Lechthaler. Father of John Welch and his wife Pamela. Grandfather of Jack Welch. Brother of Grace Barr and her husband John, Joseph Shea, former Quincy city clerk, and his wife Josephine, and Mary Louise and her husband Jim Neal. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Shea was a 1956 graduate of Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree and Miss Farmers School of Cookery in Boston. He was initially a U.S. postal worker before discovering the alluring and nomadic ways of thoroughbred horse racing. Mr. Shea was, for many years, self-employed as a jockey agent and worked at countless tracks across the country, most recently Philadelphia Park, aka Parx. Everyone on the backside knew “Dixie” Shea.
Well liked and respected, Mr. Shea was one of those rare and fortunate individuals who loved his work. Everyone was enriched by his companionship. He will be sorely missed.
Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.
